Genealogy research, German citizenship by descent, and heritage trip planning rooted in lived experience, historical care, and deep personal connection.

Your Family Has a Story

Some are carefully kept. Others are scattered across continents, tucked into memory, or nearly lost to time.

At Roots with Rudi, I help you uncover the stories your family carries through records, relationships, and lived experience. Whether you’re applying for German citizenship, mapping your ancestry, or planning a heritage trip, I approach every project with care, precision, and personal investment.

This isn’t just research. It’s a way to reclaim what’s been lost, reconnect across generations, and to the people it belongs with.

Rudi’s Great Grandfather, Rabbi Dr. Adolf Kober

I’m Rudi Weinberg, and my path to this work began with a mystery. My mother knew very little about her family, just a few names and stories about my great-grandfather, Rabbi Dr. Adolf Kober, the last head rabbi of Cologne, Germany before the war. He was a personal hero of mine growing up, and I longed to know more.

While my father had traced his side of the family back to 19th-century America, my mother’s side felt like a missing piece. So I started searching, and what I found changed everything. I discovered that my great-grandfather had siblings who survived the Holocaust, and through them, living relatives scattered across England and beyond. When I reached out and they wrote back saying they remembered my grandmother’s visits and I cried tears of joy. For the first time, we were stitching our family back together.

That experience became a turning point. I spent nearly a decade uncovering lost branches, translating letters, and helping long-lost relatives reconnect. What began as a personal journey became a calling to help others rediscover their own stories.

I left a career in engineering to do this work full-time because it feels essential. Helping people reclaim their German Jewish heritage and reconnect with the past brings healing, identity, and legacy back into the hands of those who seek it.

Today, I guide clients through the process of reclaiming German citizenship by descent, build richly detailed family trees, and help preserve what might otherwise be lost. My approach is precise, personal, and grounded in lived experience.

This is more than genealogy. It’s restoration and rediscovery.

It would be an honor to help you tell your family’s story.

Reclaiming German Citizenship by Descent

If you’re eligible for German citizenship as a descendant of someone who fled or was persecuted under the Nazi regime, I can help you navigate the process with care and precision.

This work is deeply personal to me. Most of my clients apply under Article 116(2) or Article 15 of the German Basic Law—both of which provide paths for descendants of persecuted individuals to reclaim what was taken. Whether you’re just starting out or feeling overwhelmed mid-process, I’m here to guide you every step of the way.

Germany currently recognizes two primary legal paths:

  • Article 116(2): For descendants of German citizens who were stripped of their citizenship due to Nazi persecution

  • Article 15: For those historically excluded by discriminatory laws, including descendants of German mothers or those forced to renounce citizenship in order to flee

If you’re unsure whether you qualify, I’ll help you find out.

Depending on your needs, I offer:

  • Historical document research (U.S., German, and international sources)

  • Guidance identifying and obtaining vital records

  • Support navigating German laws and eligibility criteria

  • Application preparation and organization

  • Optional translation and notary coordination

  • Coordination with consulates or family members applying together

“This journey reconnected me with the people and places that shaped my story.”

  • While my father had traced his lineage in America back to the late 1800s, my mother’s side of the family was always a mystery. She would tell me stories about her parents, her grandmother, and her grandfather, Rabbi Dr. Adolf Kober, the last Head Rabbi of Cologne before the war. He became one of my heroes growing up.

I was especially moved by the fact that my mother had grown up just a few blocks from where we lived. It sparked my imagination to know that I was walking in the footsteps of my ancestors.

In 2016, I started building my mother’s family tree on Ancestry. I thought I might uncover a few names. What I found changed everything.

My great-grandfather had four siblings, three of whom survived the Holocaust. Each of them had children, and those children had families of their own. That meant I had living relatives. I reached out to some of them on Facebook. When they responded and told me they remembered my grandmother and great-grandparents from their visits to England, I cried tears of joy.

That moment connected so many threads. My mother had saved my grandmother’s old letters, but we had never known who they were addressed to. Now, I could finally put names, faces, and real people to those stories. We were stitching our family back together after decades apart.

That was just the beginning. Over the years, I continued growing the tree, uncovering more relatives and even helping connect family members who had no idea each other existed.

During this time, I took a heritage trip to Germany. I walked the streets my ancestors had lived on. I stood in front of homes where their names were once on the doors. I visited synagogues, cemeteries, and archives.

My goal was always to sew back together what had been torn apart by war, distance, and time. This journey reconnected me with the people and places that shaped my story. I want others to know that kind of discovery is possible.
